Lesson 44.5 · Interview Method and Simulation

Where Each Data Structure Lives in Real Systems

Every structure in this course runs inside real products: hash maps in caches and databases, heaps in schedulers and feeds, graphs in maps and build systems, tries in search boxes, queues in messaging. Knowing these links makes both coding and design rounds easier.

Think of it like this

Learning the tools in a toolbox is one thing; walking through a house and seeing where each tool was used (the hammer in the frame, the level on the shelves) is what makes you a builder. This lesson walks through the house.

1.The map

Hash map (Module 4): caches (Redis is a giant hash table), database hash indexes, sharding (hash the key, pick a server), deduplication, and Bloom filters (several hashes into a bit array).

Linked list + hash map (Module 40): the LRU cache inside every web framework, CPU and CDN.

Heap (Module 19): job schedulers (run the earliest deadline next), timers, Dijkstra in route planners, top-K trending lists, and merging sorted log files.

Queue and deque (Module 11): message queues, task queues in thread pools, BFS in web crawlers, sliding-window rate limiters.

Trees and tries (Modules 17–20): B-trees in every SQL index, tries in autocomplete and routers (IP prefix lookup), Merkle trees for syncing replicas.

Graphs (Modules 21–28): maps and ride-hailing (shortest paths), build systems and workflow engines (topological sort), social networks (BFS for "people you may know"), network reliability (bridges and articulation points).

Dynamic programming (Modules 29–33): diff tools and spell checkers (edit distance), text justification, resource planning (knapsack).

Each module page has a "Where this shows up in real systems" box linking to the matching System Design topic, and the System Design topics link back here.

Quick check

A ride app must show the 5 nearest drivers out of 50 000 every second. Which structures are involved?

Remember

  • Every course structure has a production home.
  • Mention the real-world use in interviews: it shows depth.
  • Follow the links between modules and System Design topics.

Common mistakes

  • Treating DSA and system design as separate subjects; senior interviews connect them.
