Lesson 44.3 · Interview Method and Simulation

What Interviewers Expect at Each Level

Interns and new graduates are judged mostly on problem solving and correct code; mid-level on speed, clean code and trade-offs; seniors on clarity, judgement and connecting the algorithm to real systems.

Think of it like this

A driving test for a learner checks that you can drive safely; an advanced test also checks smoothness, anticipation and how you handle unusual situations.

1.Rough guide

Intern / new graduate: reach a working solution to one or two medium problems, explain complexity, respond well to hints. Mostly arrays, strings, hashing, two pointers, trees, BFS/DFS, simple DP.

Mid-level (2–5 years): solve mediums reliably and some hards, write clean, tested code without much prompting, discuss alternatives and trade-offs (time vs memory, readability).

Senior: everything above, plus clear structure under ambiguity, scaling the idea ("if the data doesn't fit in memory…", "if many threads call this…"), and linking problems to production designs (caches, rate limiters, schedulers). Coding rounds are often paired with system design rounds; see the System Design course.

Common scoring areas everywhere: problem solving, coding, testing/verification, and communication.

Remember

  • Correctness first at every level.
  • Seniority adds judgement and scale.
  • Communication is always scored.

Common mistakes

  • Over-engineering a simple question to sound senior.
